in Introduce yourself, if you're ready to come out from behind the curtains where you've been hiding

Well, hello. :) I've been writing all my life but only lately have wanted to consider myself a writer. Trained as a medical and scientific editor, I mostly work on nonfiction but I love fiction and creative writing. I'm science-minded, so I think my prose may be a bit mechanical. I'm still working on finding my style. I need critique and probably some creative writing lessons. I need to read more fiction. Most of my work and characters center around the activist causes I embrace (animal rights, environmentalism, animals in general). So I have a narrow audience, but I love writing to my passion.
I'm 40 and just getting down to work after gestating one of my novel ideas for a decade. A decade of producing mostly nothing. This year was the year I finally had it with my lack of progress. I told myself I was going to produce something by year's end or throw it all away. So I tried NaNoWriMo and was able to complete 50,000 words in a month. And I kind of like them! I have the start of two novels now, and I just need to immerse myself in writing if I can. Through forums, writers groups etc.
During November, I found out that I had won a writing contest I entered back in September. I was really excited. This was nonfiction, but it was creative in a sense that it was the telling of a true story. Here's the link if you're curious. Mine's the one on top: http://www.ourpastloves.com/2012-contest-winners
